Why Choose to Sail with John and Crew

“From moment one we were treated like members of their family”

Family and friends had rented a house and were looking for something to do on the Friday before we had to head back to our “reality”. What a beautiful place to be during the third week of July! Well . . . right down the street from our rental house was Saco Pier in Camp Ellis at the mouth of the Saco River. We telephoned Captain John Thibeault and his “First-Mate” Emma . . . and made a reservation for 6 of us to go for a 2-hour sail on beautiful Saco Bay aboard their 37’ wooden vintage sailing yacht ‘Lodesterre’. There was plenty of parking (pay to park) in the lot by the pier. We arrived 15 minutes prior to our reserved time, as requested, for our “safety lecture”. From moment one we were treated like members of their family. John and Emma are wonderful conversationalists. We truly learned from them of the history of the area. Ask them where THEY go to eat: Run of the Mill Public House and Brewery, and you will be in for a treat! Where was I? Oh, yeah . . . John . . . Emma . . . sailing . . . peaceful . . . relaxing. A great way to celebrate my 62nd birthday.

Fun, Intimate Sailboat Experience on Lovely Saco Bay

We’ve taken visitors on schooner tours of Portland’s Casco Bay, which is a very nice trip. When we learned that Saco Daysails was offering trips of Saco Bay, we were anxious to check out that alternative, too. We loved this experience. Captain john’s 37-foot wooden sailboat is a beauty and the best thing about it is that he only takes 6 passengers, as opposed to the several dozen the larger schooner companies carry. While there might not be quite as much to see in Saco Bay as there is in Casco Bay, it’s still a lovely trip, with the chance to see seals, Wood Island Lighthouse islands, and the beautiful homes along the shore of Biddeford Pool. And the intimacy of being part of a small group and being able to talk freely to Captain John is terrific. You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks aboard, too. If the winds are brisk and the skies are bright, it’s hard to imagine a more enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours than on Saco Daysails cruise.

A perfect Maine afternoon

There are few things better than spending an afternoon out on the water in Maine on a picture-perfect blue-sky day. Spending it on a beautiful wooden sailboat is the best! Capt. John and 1st mate Emma were wonderful – very capable and full of information about the area, the boat, and sailing but when we wanted to just sit back and enjoy the ride and the food and drinks, we brought on board they just blended into the background. We had a very smooth ride on a very windy day and saw jumping sturgeons, a porpoise, and a minke whale. Quite a day!

This should be #1 thing to do in Saco, Maine

Captain John emulates the whole “Maine experience”, right down to the stories, the accent, and his passion for sailing. Brought our small cooler and enjoyed a great family sailboat experience.
